Equity Options Volume Up 18.3 Percent Over Same Period In 2000 Month-end equity open interest reaches new high
Chicago—July 3, 2001
The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that for the first six months of the year, equity options volume surpassed the same period in 2000 by 18.3 percent. During the first half of 2001, equity options volume was 390,145,359 contracts vs. 329,610,902 contracts.
June equity options volume was 55,611,449 contracts (21,857,058 puts and 33,754,391 calls), a 9.3 percent increase over the 50,867,008 contracts (16,093,478 puts and 34,773,530 calls) traded in June 2000.
Month-end equity open interest set a new high with 75,742,279 contracts, surpassing the previous month-end high set in May with 73,644,995 contracts. It also represents a 34.3 percent increase over month-end equity open interest of 56,390,780 in June 2000. At its highest point on June 15, equity open interest stood at 81,929,879 contracts.
Equity open interest, the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire, is seen as an indication of longer-term investing in these instruments.
"Despite a very different market environment, we are still experiencing growth over 2000, and the high equity open interest indicates that investors are using options for the long term," said Paul Stevens, President, OIC.
Average daily equity options volume in June was 2,648,164 contracts, a 14.5 percent increase over 2,312,137 contracts traded in June 2000.
