April Options Volume Increases Slightly Over March Open Interest continues increased pace over 2001
Chicago—May 06, 2002
The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that April options volume of 58,465,344 contracts (24,202,346 puts and 34,262,998 calls), increased by 6% over March’s 55,056,284 contracts (21,142,963 puts and 33,913,321 calls). One year ago, April equity options volume was 70,510,617 contracts (26,888,890 puts and 43,621,727 calls).
Month-end equity open interest of 75,534,666 contracts rose 8.63 percent from 69,532,549 contracts in April 2001. At its highest point on April 19, equity open interest stood at 88,513,979 contracts.
Equity open interest, the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire, is seen as an indication of longer-term investing in these instruments.
"We’re pleased with the continued rise in open interest over last year. We encourage investors to continue increasing their options knowledge during this uncertain market by using our latest online classes, attending our seminars or by contacting our options experts at our call center,” said Paul Stevens, OIC President.
Average daily equity volume for April was 2,657,516 contracts as compared to 3,525,531 contracts in 2001. Year-to-date equity options volume is 236,280,663 contracts, compared to 270,074,419 contracts at the same time last year.
