The More Affluent, Active and Strategic Investors are Using Options as Part of a More Diverse Portfolio According to a New Study

Chicago—April 25, 2005

The Options Industry Council (OIC) today released the results of the latest study of options users, conducted by Harris Interactive, Inc., and compares those results with previous studies conducted in 1995 and 2000.

As equity options have become a more mainstream investment choice, trading volumes have soared in recent years. Even in 2005, trading volume in the first quarter was the highest quarterly volume ever recorded and the monthly volume record was broken-twice.

This study-as well as the previous two-provides a profile of options investors and compares them to investors who do not use options.

The study found the typical options investor to be an affluent and active trader that is tolerant of a reasonable amount of risk. That investor is also a well informed decision maker and strategic thinker with a diversified portfolio.

Investors who do not use options say it is because they don't know enough about them. This information helps OIC in its educational efforts. The study and the profile it provides can also be useful to brokers, investment advisers and product developers.
