The Options Industry Council Announces November Volume Climbs 30% Over Year Ago Level

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that options trading volume continued to grow in November as 149,274,804 contracts changed hands, a 29.95% increase over the Nov. 2004 level of 114,869,591 contracts - the highest volume month of last year.
November’s trading volume is the second highest month on record, following October’s 154,794,867 contracts. Average daily volume in November was 7,108,324, more than 1.6 million contracts per day better than Nov. 2004.
Year-to-date options volume reached 1,366,963,459 contracts traded at the end of November, a 26.93% increase over the same point last year.
Equity options volume for November reached 136,197,319 contracts, 29.18% higher than November last year and also the second highest month on record for equity options following October. Year-to-date equity options trading volume is up 25.9% over the same period a year ago.
Three of the top 10 total volume days were recorded during the month, and all 10 were recorded this year. Four of the top 10 equity options volume days were recorded in November, while nine of the 10 were recorded this year.
A new open interest record of 216,394,620 was set on Nov. 18. Open interest is the total number of options contracts that have not yet been offset, exercised or allowed to expire.
