The Options Industry Council Announces Equity Options Trading in May Increased 22.8%

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that May equity options trading volume totaled 99,502,222 (41,626,321 puts and 57,875,901 calls), a 22.82% increase over the year-ago level of 81,011,985.
The Options Clearing Corp. reported a monthly volume total - including index options - at 109,766,790 contracts changing hands in May, an increase of 22.55% over May 2004. This marks the eighth consecutive month of total trading volume above 100 million contracts.
Equity open interest for May at month-end stood at 146,320,652 contracts, an increase of 16.54% over May 2004 month-end. Equity open interest, the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire, is seen as an indication of longer-term investing in these instruments.
Additional volume statistics reported by The Options Clearing Corporation include:
- Average daily equity options volume: 4,738,201 (up 17.0% from May 2004)
- Average daily total options volume: 5,226,990 (up 16.7% from May 2004)
Total options volume marked a new top-10 record day on May 18 with 7,637,247 contracts traded, which is the sixth-highest daily volume total ever. May 18 total equity options volume reached 6,658,280 contracts, ranking the day as the seventh highest equity volume day ever.
The OIC's educational seminars enjoyed an uptick in attendance of 9.3% over the same January - April period of 2004. In this period, OIC added two seminars to the 2005 schedule yet the average number of attendees per session still grew 4.3% over 2004.
