The Options Industry Council Announces August Volume Jumps 43% Over Last Year
Chicago—September 2, 2005
The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that August options trading volume totaled 122,255,529, a 43.3% increase over the year-ago level of 85,309,197. August marks the eleventh consecutive month that total options trading has exceeded 100 million contracts.
Year-to-date options volume stands at 931,020,190, a 21.1% increase over the same period last year. Options trading in the first eight months of 2005 also exceeded the volume recorded in all of 2003 - which was the second highest trading year behind 2004.
Equity options volume for August reached 109,730,331 contracts (46,596,733 puts and 63,133,598 calls), 42.8% higher than August last year. Year-to-date equity options trading volume is up 20.1% over the same period a year ago.
The August volume represents the third highest monthly volume ever recorded (behind April and March of this year). August is generally a month of light trading, as seen over the past two years when it posted the second lowest monthly volume.
"The typical August summer doldrums didn’t impede the sustained growth of the U.S. options industry," said Michael Walinskas, OIC Executive Director. "Market conditions and educational efforts have provided investors - both retail and institutional - the knowledge and opportunity to employ the many uses of options, raising the level of experience with the product in the marketplace and driving volume higher."
A new open interest record of 194,446,375 contracts was set on August 19. Open interest is the total number of options contracts that have not yet been offset, exercised or allowed to expire.
Additional volume statistics reported by The Options Clearing Corporation include:
- Average daily equity options volume: 4,770,884 (up 36.6% from August 2004)
- Average daily total options volume: 5,315,458 (up 37.1% from August 2004)
