The OIC Reports 24 Percent Increase In Options Volume During The Month Of November

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that total options trading volume in November reached 184,926,170 contracts, a 23.9 percent increase of the year-ago level of 149,274,804 contracts.
The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) reported year-to-date total options volume stands at 1,857,955,837 contracts, an increase of 35.9 percent over the same period last year. Average daily volume year-to-date is 8,043,099 contracts, also up 35.9 percent over the same period in 2005.
Equity options volume for the month reached 168,432,110 contracts, 23.7 percent higher than November 2005. Year-to-date equity options volume currently stands at 1,689,024,664 contracts, up 26.4 percent over the same point last year.
Additional November volume statistics reported by OCC include:
- Average daily equity options volume 8,020,576 (up 23.7 percent over November 2005 figure of 6,485,587 contracts)
- Average daily total options volume 8,806,008 (up 23.9 percent over November 2005 figure of 7,108,324)
A new top 10 record volume day for total options was added on November 17 when 13,288,708 contracts traded hands. That same day, equity options volume reached 12,027,058 contracts, setting a top 10 record volume day for equity options.
Also on November 17, a new open interest record was set with 258,115,387 contracts, surpassing the previous record set on set on October 20 with 253,883,642 contracts. Open interest, the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire, is seen as an indication of longer-term investing in these instruments.
