The Options Industry Council Announces June Options Trading Increased 31% over Same Period Last Year
Chicago—July 2, 2007
The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that total options trading volume in June reached 223,771,463 contracts, a 31 percent increase over the year-ago level of 170,749,224 contracts.
OIC also reported that equity options volume increased 33 percent over June 2006 and year-to-date equity options volume is up 24 percent over the same point in 2005. Total options volume for the first half of 2007 is 25 percent higher than it was in the first half of last year—a record-setting year when more than 2 billion contracts traded.
Average daily volume maintained the high levels it has consistently reached this year. Total daily volume average for June was 10,655,784 contracts, a 38 percent increase over June 2006. Daily average trading volume for 2007 is 10,155,684 contracts, 26 percent higher than the same period last year.
The Options Clearing Corporation reported a new open interest record was set on June 15 with 276,826,730 total contracts and 253,399,576 equity contracts. The month also set a new month-end open interest record with nearly 253 million contracts. Open interest, the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire, is seen as an indication of longer-term investing in these instruments.
Total options volume added three new top 10 record days in June when 15,506,113 contracts traded on June 12, 14,819,658 contracts traded on June 14, and 14,350,040 contracts traded on June 7, becoming—respectively—the third, fifth and seventh highest daily volume totals ever. Equity options volume reached 14,066,371 contracts on June 12, 13,273,493 contracts on June 14 and 12,757,694 contracts on June 7, ranking them—respectively—as the third, fourth and sixth highest equity volume days ever.
