The Options Industry Council Announces January Trading Soars 81%, Setting New Monthly Volume Record

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that total options trading volume in January came in at 357,163,288 contracts, an 80.77 percent increase over the year-ago level of 197,577,509 contracts. This sets a new monthly trading volume record 15 percent higher than the previous record set in November 2007.
OIC also reported that a new equity options volume record was set in January with 328,781,253 contracts changing hands, an increase of 80.65 percent over January 2007.
Six of the top 10 highest volume days were recorded in January for both total options and equity options. At the start of January, daily trading volume had reached 20 million contracts on only four occasions. That level was achieved seven more times during the month of January.
Daily trading volume for 2008 is averaging 17,007,776 contracts compared to 9,878,876 contracts for the same period last year, which equals a 72.16 percent increase. Average daily trading volume in January is also 49 percent higher than 2007’s record-breaking average daily volume of 11.4 million contracts.
Daily equity options volume had an average of 15,656,250 contracts per day in January, which was an increase of 72.04 percent over the same month last year.
