Chicago—May 4, 2005

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that equity options trading in April rose 18.39 percent over April 2004. The banner month included a new record volume day and three consecutive trading days that produced new "top 10" volume day records.

The Options Clearing Corp. reported a new monthly volume record for total options trading - including index options - with 124,206,018 contracts changing hands in April, up 0.2 percent from the previous record set in March, and an increase of 21.19 percent from April 2004.

Volume in equity options for April reached 112,197,174 contracts traded, 675,535 contracts less than the monthly record set in March. Equity options volume set a new daily record on April 15 with 10,097,235 contracts traded, a 25.6 percent increase from the previous record set on January 16, 2004.

Total options also reached a new daily high point on April 15 when 11,254,044 contracts traded, 31.4 percent higher than the previous record of 8,561,864 contracts set on Jan. 16, 2004.

"Volume is running about 13 percent higher than it was at this point last year - which is significant given that 2004 was a record year,” said Michael Walinskas, Executive Director of OIC. “Investors - both individual and institutional - continue to drive the growth as they advance their understanding of the versatility and usefulness of options."
