The OIC Announces May Options Trading Volume Up 16 Percent

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that 266,870,046 total options contracts were traded in May, a 16.42 percent increase over May 2007. Average daily trading volume for the month was 12,708,097 contracts, which represents a 21.97 percent increase over the same period last year.
The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) reported year-to-date volume at the end of May stood at 1,432,175,576 contracts, an increase of 38.3 percent over the same period last year. Year-to-date daily volume is averaging 13,770,919 contracts, up 36.97 percent over the same period in 2007.
Equity options saw 246,899,892 contracts change hands, 19.26 percent higher than the previous May. Year-to-date equity options volume is 1,320,293,884 contracts, up 41.05 percent over the same point last year. Daily equity options volume averaged 11,757,138 contracts per day in May, an increase of 24.94 percent over the same month last year. Year-to-date equity options are averaging 12,695,134 contracts, representing a 39.7 percent increase over May 2007.
