Chicago—October 2, 2006

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that a total of 158,965,267 contracts traded during September, representing a 20.5 percent increase over September 2005 where 131,873,598 contracts changed hands.

The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) reported that year-to-date total options volume stands at 1,481,684,428 contracts, an increase of 39.4 percent over the same period last year, while year-to-date average daily volume is 7,881,300 contracts, up 40.1 percent. Based on average daily volumes, the options industry should surpass the 2005 annual volume record of 1,504,311,540 contracts within a matter of days.

September equity options volume reached 144,299,149 contracts, an increase of 20.1 percent over last year’s number of 120,125,847 contracts. Year-to-date equity options volume is at 1,345,840,329 contracts, up 39.2 percent over the same period last year.

Additional September volume statistics reported by OCC include:

September Highlights

A new open interest record was set on September 15 with 231,985,660 contracts, surpassing the previous record set on August 18 of 229,776,432 contracts. Open interest, the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire, is seen as an indication of longer-term investing in these instruments.

New top 10 record volume days were added on September 12 when 12,924,543 options contracts traded hands, making it the fourth-highest daily volume ever. That same day, equity options volume reached 11,783,886 contracts, resulting in the third-highest equity volume day.
