Options Industry Begins 2007 with New Records, High Growth Trend Continues

Chicago—February 1, 2007

The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that January trading volume totaled 197,577,509 contracts, up 11 percent over January 2006 when 178,193,346 contracts traded and set the monthly volume record at that time.

The month jumped out to an impressive start as 15,831,615 contracts traded on January 5, setting a new daily trading volume record. On the same day, equity options volume reached 15,068,634, marking a new daily trading equity volume record.

The enduring high-growth trend in options trading can also be measured in January's average daily volume. At 9,878,876 contracts, this represents a 22.3 percent increase over the average daily volume for 2006 which was 8,079,074 contracts. January's average daily volume is also an 11 percent increase over the same period last year.

Equity options volume also increased in January with 182,003,586 contracts, an increase of 10.4 percent over the 164,791,678 contracts traded in January 2006.

January Highlights

  • Equity open interest reached a new high on January 19 of 243,918,581 contracts. Open interest is the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire.
