University Events: OIC Instructor Roma Colwell x Roosevelt University

OIC instructor Roma Colwell was joined by Jose Terrazas, Senior Associate, Market Risk & Default Management, OCC, on a visit to Roosevelt University to engage students from the finance club in a discussion about how the listed options market operates and the critical role clearing and risk management play in maintaining market stability. The session brought real-world market structure concepts into the classroom, giving students a clearer picture of how options trading functions beyond the screen.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on current market dynamics, including the rise in zero days-to-expiration (0DTE) options and their impact on overall options volume. This led to a broader conversation about who participates in the options market, the different objectives market participants bring, and how trading behavior has evolved alongside changes in product availability and technology.

Risk management remained a consistent theme throughout the session, as students learned how clearing infrastructure is designed to withstand market stress and why those safeguards are essential to the functioning of the broader financial system.

The session also included an open dialogue around career paths and professional development within the derivatives industry. Jose Terrazas, a Roosevelt University alumnus, shared perspectives from his career in market risk and default management, offering students a practical view of how academic foundations translate into roles across market infrastructure organizations.
